Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was a college professor from the State of Maine,
who volunteered for the Union Army during the American Civil War. He is most
well known for his leadership at the Battle of Gettysburg Pennsylvania where
his regiment withstood repeated assaults at Little Round Top and finally drove
the Confederates off with a bayonet charge. He was awarded the Medal of Honor,
was later severely wounded at Petersburg and eventually served as the governor
of Maine. He died of complications of his war wounds in 1914, a full 50 years
after hed received them, and is considered by many to be the last casualty of
the Civil War.
